Before You Go: Setting Expectations
A monster truck show is one of the loudest, most visually overwhelming live events you can attend. That's entirely the point — but it helps to know what you're walking into. The decibel levels rival rock concerts, the shows typically run 2–3 hours, and the combination of engine noise, pyrotechnics, and crowd energy is genuinely unlike anything else. Go prepared, and you'll have an incredible time.
The Most Important Item: Hearing Protection
This cannot be overstated enough: bring hearing protection, especially if you're attending with children. Monster truck engines running at full throttle in an enclosed arena produce sound levels that can cause hearing damage with extended exposure. Options include:
- Foam earplugs: Inexpensive, widely available, and effective. Pick up a multipack before you go.
- Earmuff-style protectors: Better for young children who won't keep earplugs in. Look for a Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) of 25 or higher.
- Electronic hearing protection: Higher-end option that reduces harmful noise while still allowing you to hear announcements and music clearly.
Many venues sell disposable earplugs at the merchandise stand, but they often run out. Don't count on buying them there.
Choosing Your Seat
Where you sit dramatically affects the experience. Here's a quick breakdown:
| Seat Location | Best For | Trade-Off |
|---|---|---|
| Floor Level (trackside) | Maximum impact, closest to trucks | Limited sightlines, heavy debris exposure |
| Lower Bowl | Great action view and crowd atmosphere | Can be blocked by ramp structures |
| Mid-Level | Best all-around view of the full track | Slightly less visceral feeling |
| Upper Bowl | Full aerial perspective, great for freestyle | Distance reduces some of the intensity |
Pro tip: For freestyle competition, a slightly elevated view helps you see the full arc of jumps and tricks. Consider mid-level or upper bowl seats if freestyle is your priority.
The Pit Party: Don't Skip It
The pit party is a pre-show event where fans get direct access to the trucks and can meet drivers. It typically runs for 1–2 hours before the main show and requires a separate pass. This is where monster truck events separate themselves from almost every other live sport:
- Walk right up to the actual competition trucks and inspect them up close
- Get autographs and photos with the drivers — many are genuinely fan-friendly and accessible
- Great opportunity for kids to sit in trucks for photos (often offered at no extra charge)
- Buy merchandise directly from team rigs
Pit party passes sell out. Buy them when you buy your main tickets.
What to Pack
- ✅ Hearing protection (for every member of your group)
- ✅ Safety glasses or sunglasses (debris flies in the lower sections)
- ✅ Cash for merchandise and food — card readers sometimes struggle with arena wifi
- ✅ Comfortable, closed-toe shoes
- ✅ A light jacket — arenas can be cold when the doors are open
- ✅ Phone with a good camera charged to 100%
- ✅ Signed parental consent if attending with minors (check venue policies)
Arriving Early Pays Off
Plan to arrive at least 90 minutes before showtime if you have pit party passes, or at least 45 minutes before the show even if you don't. Parking at arena events is notoriously slow, and lines at entrances can back up quickly. Getting in early also gives you time to find your seats, grab food without rushing, and soak in the pre-show atmosphere — which is genuinely part of the experience.
